Banana Split wins Award at Film Festival
The internationally acclaimed documentary Banana Split has been named “Best Feature Length Documentary” at the Latin American Environmental Media Festival in New Orleans in April.
The internationally acclaimed documentary Banana Split has been named “Best Feature Length Documentary” at the Latin American Environmental Media Festival in New Orleans in April.
Banana Split was produced and directed by Dr. Ron Harpelle of Lakehead University’s History Department, and local filmmaker, Kelly Saxberg. The Festival was seeking innovative and provocative films, videos, and digital media that address environmental issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the works needed to address issues of the environment and environmental justice.
Banana Split also won Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Deborah Fletcher Award of Excellence in Filmmaking in 2004.
CCAE to present three Awards to Lakehead University
Lakehead U will pick up three awards at the annual conference of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) in May – a silver award for the Lakehead U website, a bronze award for the 2003-2004 Annual Report, and a bronze award for the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Environment CD ROM entitled “Clearcut?”.
CCAE is committed to fostering excellence in institutional advancement. It has close to 1,000 members representing more than 170 post-secondary institutions in Canada.

Sarah Vernon-Scott voted Leader/Scholar/Steward for 2005
The Psychology Graduate Students' Association has elected Sarah Vernon-Scott (photo) as being the graduate student who exhibits a healthy balance of leadership, scholarship and stewardship. Nominators mentioned her efforts representing students at the departmental level and keeping students informed of those activities, while promoting a friendly and welcoming program.

Electrical Engineering students win National Competition
A Lakehead U group supervised by Dr. Tayebi (Electrical Engineering) has won the 2004 IEEE Canada Paper Competition (1st place). The Life Member Award of $500 for best overall paper in the Central Area was given to Chris Erickson, Jeffrey Cowan, and Andrej Zlatanovic, for their paper entitled, “Computer Based State Feedback Control of a Double Inverted Pendulum.”
